A NICE HELPING OF INDO-INSPIRED SARTORIAL STYLE

THE PROJECT:

A Kind Of Guise is an acclaimed Munich-based fashion house that champions design that is contemporary yet timeless, classy yet functional.

They only use carefully selected high-quality fabrics and manufacture our pieces entirely in Germany.

Each season, they take to the road to venture to a far-flung exotic location to draw inspiration for their new collection.

As part of their Ayam Cemani SS19 collection, I was asked to illustrate a fabric pattern that combined high-low Balinese culture and an old-school Hawaiian shirt.

THE APPROACH:

I drew up a pattern that incorporated a bunch of decidedly cliché Balinese icons such as:

  • palm trees;

  • Bintang cans;

  • Hindu temples;

  • cock fighting; and

  • Balinese dancers.

I then coloured these icons in a muted colour palette that complemented - but not mirrored - the tones that traditionally adorn classic batik fabrics.

THE RESULTS:

The finished pattern became a foundational motif in the collection with it being applied to a silk shirt, swim shorts and a scarf.

The shirt and shorts retailed between EUR150 and EUR200 and sold out within days.

AN EARLY INTRODUCTION TO ANIMALS AND THE WORLD OF WORK

THE PROJECT:

Initially starting out as a little daily Instagram challenge, Animals at Work developed into a fully-fledged baby book that introduced young learners to three concepts at once:

  1. the alphabet;

  2. the animal world; and

  3. the world of work.

I published the book and sold both hard and soft copy versions via Etsy and some select retailers in Sydney.

GIVING COLOUR TO A GLOBAL RESPONSE TO COVID-19

THE PROJECT:

Good Guise is a German face mask brand that was rapidly launched as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The brand was developed by a the Munich-based fashion house A Kind Of Guise as a way to keep their manufacturers working during the start of the crisis and to help Germany keep up with the unprecedented demand for face masks.

I was asked to develop a diverse set of clean, crisp illustrations that would emphasise the sense of global solidarity that arose as a response to this border-less health challenge.

THE APPROACH:

I created a large suite of portraits that represented a wide variety of cultures and did so in the Good Guise brand colours.

I also created a succession of images to help direct users on the correct way to sterilise, put-on and wear a Good Guise mask.
